About the Team

The Lake District mountain rescue teams are independent organisations under the regional umbrella of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association. In the early 1990s, LDSAMRA commissioned Wally Keay, an experienced outdoor educationalist, to review rescue provision in the Lakes. His report, "Rescue 2000", was published in July 1993.

Among his recommendations, he thought the number of teams should be reduced by amalgamations to remove duplication of resources and facilities.

The two Outward Bound Schools, in Eskdale and Ullswater, merged with their neighboring teams, Wasdale and Patterdale, fairly soon afterwards. He also suggested the amalgamation of Millom and Furness.

As the Millennium approached, the two teams began talks that led to an "operational merger" in 2000 with joint training and attendance at call outs across both areas. In December 2002, both teams used the winding up clauses in their old constitutions to cease separate operations and transfer members and money to the new team.

On January 5th 2003, the Duddon and Furness MRT became Lakeland's newest team.
